Detective Rand Gary is assigned to investigate the missing persons case of Tessa Fencer and her daughter Whitney. Initial interviews with Tessa’s associates paint a picture of a gentle, intelligent woman fleeing an abusive husband, Tim Fencer, whom she believed would kill her if she left. Rand eventually discovers a hidden letter Tessa wrote predicting her own death and naming Tim as her murderer if she vanished. The letter reveals that Whitney had gone missing shortly before Tessa attempted to escape, and that Tessa suspected her estranged mother, Rhoda Shilder, was involved.
